My good friend Barclay was back in town for the weekend and we took a trip to Ellijay, GA to fish the lower section of The Tick. Eastern Fly Fishing is the premier trout club in Atlanta with waters in North Georgia. I have been fishing there waters for 5 years now and have not found a better stretch of land to fish. The man behind Eastern Fly Fishing Club is Erik Ashland, a great fly angler and all round nice guy, take care of 12 miles of private streams with locations on the Tick, Cartacey and Soque.
Barclay and I arrived just 9 to a warm overcast day; the water was a little higher than normal and has a nice green stain to it. We tied on some wholly buggers, all colors and sizes, and we started to nymph and strip the various runs where know hold large fish. Barclay landed the first rainbow around 1030 and we didn’t stop laying into them until we left that afternoon. I landed the two largest fish of the day, both over 18in, using a brown size 12 wholly bugger with a gold bead head. The best aspect of the day to me, outside spending it with a good friend, is I got to use my SweetGrass Rod my wife gave me for our engagement. We left around lunch time and head back to the city, truly great day.
